Kickstarter United Announces Stepping-Stone Agreement with Company Management
Kickstarter United, OPEIU Local 153, announced Wednesday afternoon that they have reached an agreement in principle with Kickstarter corporate leadership that they hope will pave the way for equitable treatment for those who work behind the scenes at the world's most well-known crowdfunding site.
Back in September, users of Kickstarter began to decree they would no longer use the platform for funding projects unless corporate management recognized the union. A boycott was never requested from union leaders, but The Rook & The Raven, Rowan Rook & Decard, and several other RPG creatives announced they would pull back on Kickstarter projects until the matter was settled.
The unionizing effort began in March, and grew more intense when at least two Kickstarter employees were terminated - an act which the union felt to be retaliatory.
Wednesday's agreement does not settle that issue, but it is a stepping stone towards management and the union coming to the same table to begin working out their differences.
"We are so grateful for all the support from creators, backers, and our allies at large," reads a post from the union Twitter account. "Please join us in respecting this neutrality agreement and send us your good vibes while we continue to build this union!"
Details about what happens beyond this agreement will not be known for some time; union leaders Tweeted that they have agreed to a media blackout with immediate effect.
